Hi,
Mandriva, like all other linux distrobutions, is open source. It does have a free version (Two, actually. Mandriva Free and Mandriva One), but they offer Mandriva Powerpack as an option for those who want professional support as a way to support Mandriva. You also get a subscription to Cedega, for running windows programmes and games in linux, if you purchase the Mandriva Powerpack. Other than that, it's identical to Mandriva One.
The default desktop manager in Mandriva is KDE, but the gnome desktop works just as well. When you have installed Mandriva, just download Gnome from the package manager and you're good to go.
Regards,
Chris
P.S Love your desktop, by the way. Looks very nice.
