I'm using a program which need to write to /dev/dsp/
the program works if I use it as root, but not as a user.
As a user it gives this error message when attempting to write
to /dev/dsp
Umm, the error message didn't make it into the mail. It was ... ?

Sorry the error message is :-
"sound_open_for_write:opensnd: /dev/dsp: Deviceor resource busy"

Sounds like artsd or esd or similar has hold of the dsp device, and the app expects to be able to access it directly (rather than doing so via the sound server). If the app itself isn't sufficiently configurable to set the audio method appropriately, try running it under soundwrapper:

soundwrapper appname <app_arguments>

HTH!
It may do Bill, I had a look to see if any other app was using it, and the only other app was the envy24 gui,
I'll try using the soundwrapper and see what happens, thanks

Richard
