I don't know about shortening the dialog box, but the trick I learned for 
similar situations is using <alt> <left click> to drag the box anywhere on 
the screen (without needing access to the (whatever they call it, the top of 
the dialog).

In other words, press alt, left click anywhere in the dialog box, the cursor 
will change to a cross with arrows.  Drag the box anywhere (up to get access 
to the buttons at the bottom) and release.  Now you can press those buttons.
