Following up as it may assist someone else, it was quite simple, cups was 
trying to initialize the original printer which was of course no longer 
there. Deleting the original printer solved it. I was a little surprised to 
see that although the printers are identical, when the replacement printer 
was attached it was registered as a new printer. It would appear that 
printers are identified not only by make/model but by serial number also.
