Frank, I have just lost the network again after a cold boot and I think I know what caused it. I booted into a tty session from kdm and issued startx. This tried to start kde4 which failed as the kde4 migration hasn't worked as yet, but this attemped start of kde4 produced the following message:

Expected keysim, got XF86Info: line 959 of inet.

I then booted into kde3 and nothing could get dns resolution, as /etc/resolv.conf was empty,

That;s the problem right there. Either something is erroneously emptying it, or something is intentionally emptying it and failing before it can be recreated.

Line 959 of /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet does indeed contain the only reference in the file to "XF86Info". I don't know enough about X to know why or whether this is incorrect.

As ifconfig seems to also have been removed (do you know what package provides ifconfig as the command rpm -q --whatprovides ifconfig said no package provides ifconfig),

It's in net-tools. "Provides" doesn't refer to filenames, but to logical service, e.g. all JDKs provide "java", referring to the capability of running Java rather than the filename "java" (although they all have that too). IIRC, standard MDV doesn't put /sbin in the $PATH for non-root users, so if you tried it from a non-root session it might not be found. Try /sbin/ifconfig.
