Thx Götz - it now works - yet this confirms my next problem:  On my Dell
m1210 notebook and built-in webcam (uvcvideo) fails using the latest
Cooker kernel-laptop-2.6.24

The driver loads and says "found UVC 1.00 device <unamed> (046d:08c6)"

But when I try the video in Ekiga, I get an error opening the video
device.
