What about re-evaluating what we provide in main? Currently we provide a lot of crap packages such as xmovie that barely works and half the time doesn't compile. I'm sure there are other old packages that we could get rid of or move to contribs.

I agree with this, but you have to consider also the viceversa, i.e. there are a bunch of packages in contrib, which are good, well packaged, build smootly and works fine, which are in contrib justbecause to get 'em in main is pretty difficult.

Personally, and this has nothing to do with post-release updates, although that does of course play a part, I'd like to see the stuff in main *work*. Not all of it does; some of it just plain old doesn't work, some of it needs extensive configuration or re-configuration to make it work.

I'd like main to be a repository of stuff that just plain old works... you can install it and start using it rather than a) watching it segfault or b) spending an hour configuring it (of course, that more or less is constrained to "desktop"-ish stuff... server stuff can obviously take over an hour for a good config (I'm *still* configuring apache after many years to tweak it).

My main point is I wouldn't mind, as an end-user, to see main cleaned up a little bit.

IMHO this can be obtained in this way:

- clean cooker in one shot. In next weeks/month the
tree cooker/main/release and cooker/contrib/release will be just empty. All the
packages which are included in the distro will be moved to
cooker/{main,contrib}/restarting/; then one package by one package
they will be moved into main.

Bye
Giuseppe.
