on closer inspection this seems to only happen when launching firefox from the
menu in kde, if i run mozilla-firefox from the command line in a konsole window
then there is no problem.

in the firefox preferences dialog in particular on the 'content' tab (and all
checkboxes as far as I can tell) any checkboxes which are ticked will clear the
tick if the mouse goes over the box.  losing and then regaining focus on the
dialog is enough to redisplay the ticks correctly.
