Each mirror must provide us > with the LOC data (rfc1876). I see a problem here, I manage one of the more up-to-date and faster mirror in france (distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr). Unfortunally, I don't have the control over the DNS zone, I can ask to add such entry but I am not sure our DNS can handle such information (is it a bind ?? probably but I am not sure). Moreover this mean poeple managing mirror will have to set this information. Will they do ? > > * In the installer and/or some drak* tool the closest atomic clock (ntp) > can be autodetected by using a special NS RR. > > * The appropriate administrative drak* tools can use it too, for updates > mirrors and such. > > * If used Mandriva can get statistics from their dns logs (great for the > sales guys?). > > * Tools can be developed to determine accessibility and reliability of the > mirrors and put that in the dns resource records. Mandriva is currently unable to properly manage a mirrorlist... That's why I wrote easyurpmi. This have to be fixed first. > > * In the future SIP/VoIP providers could be added to the NS RR. > > * etc., etc... Over my comment, I am not against, but again, please correct the current situation. One of great idea related to this one would be a subscribe form on the web where mirrors maintainers can set: - their name - thier mail - url to mandriva for their mirror then get automatically subscribed to the closed mirror list. Also we can imagine a tools checking mirrors integrity and sending to the maintainer when the mirror is still wrong after some delays.
