For what it's worth, I tried compiling netpbm 10.32 myself and the problem
appears to be fixed in that version.

I am using netpbm's pnmtopalm program (via Plucker) and it is crashing  
with a seg fault on the majority of images that I try to process.  I will 
attach a sample PGM image that crashes pnmtopalm when fed as input.  
Alternately the crash can be reproduced with the following command line (this 
is effectively what Plucker is doing): 
 
wget -q -O- http://www-tc.pbs.org/cringely/_g/pulp.jpg | djpeg -pnm | ppmquant 
-map /usr/share/netpbm-10.29/palmgray4.map | ppmtopgm | pnmtopalm -depth 4 
-verbose 
 
Note that pnmtopalm worked fine with Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition, which I 
believe was using netpbm 10.26.
