[1] no penguin, just standard BIOS 80-col screen resolution.
I'm not sure if this is good or bad actually.
[2] doesn't boot.
I think this is worse ;-)
It gets as far as
Initializing USB Controller (usb-uhci) [OK]
Initializing USB Controller (uhci-hcd) [OK]
and then hangs -- caps lock doesn't light up, control-C
doesn't do anything and neither does control-alt-del.
Next on a normal boot is Mount USB filesystems.
I do have an external USB drive connected.

I am back to 2.6.10-1mdk since 2.6.10-2 didn't boot, and -3
had problems with gnome-vfs (e.g. "save as" in gimp didn't work).
