I chose unicode support at the beginning of the installation. In use now, the 
extended characters like ä,ö,ü,ß, etc. are not displayed. Neither in the shell, 
nor in KDE applications like Konqueror. I also chose kernel 2.4. Language 
settings english, german and italian.
