Looks like the keymap problem is this change in rc.sysinit (apparently
intentional?)

     KEYMAP="$KEYTABLE.map"

it was:

     KEYMAP=$KEYTABLE

On x86, /etc/sysconfig/console/default.kmap exists, so this code isn't
executed. I changed the line on my 10.1, and now I get "OK".

loadkeys us.map fails on both x86 and ppc:

[root@presario21 root]# loadkeys us.map
findkeymap: No such file or directory
cannot open file us.map

Are you updating your packages? Run it from a console and see what the
errors are.
