Switching to hard disk from CD isn't going to make much of a difference.  
I assume you tried:

install-gui gui-old video=aty128fb

as the installer mentions?

I guess I don't understand why you're so against using the text install.  
You only do it once normally, then never have to look at it again :)

Upgrade from 9.1 using urpmi.  I haven't looked at the installer in some 
time, and I suspect there are issues with it.  There's a long message in 
the archive from a few months back on what I did on my iMac to get 
started.
