Do you know what video adapter and/or what driver YDL is using?

What exactly is the issue with fbdev for you? Too slow? color depth?, 
resolution?  It could be the the "default" entries are good enough, and 
you want to push up the depth/resolution to more your liking.  If it's 
speed, then another driver may be better.
