there're several issues:
- Qt/KDE really should support m17n, that is mixing texts of different
  languages; once language is know, it should be easy to use the
  proper font (but see below)
- Qt not defaulting to other fonts availlable to a given locale (hence
  the squares); according to glenn & laurent, this should be fixed in
  Qt4 (at least! :-))
