Hi, It seems that something went really wrong in my box in the course of recent updates... As a last resort, I reinstalled Mandrake 10.0 and updated it with cooker repositories again. Now SCIM 0.99.2 and UIM 0.4.1 are working beautifully as before and as designed. :) 1. "scim -d" loads x11 FrontEnd module under any locale. 2. MCC opens in couple of seconds and another keyboard icon shows up in systray, from where I (as root) can disable unnecessary IM engines and switch input methods if needed. 3. All enabled input methods become available in gtk applications regardless of locale settings. With LC_CTYPE=ja_JP (=eucjp), for example, you can use only Japanese input methods in qt apps, but all language IM engines become accessible in gtk apps.
