Hello everyone
While trying to get some ATI Cards to work I tested the last XFree86-4.4 mdk package. My experiences on two machines:
1. Dual Opteron, Tyan Thunder K8S with Radeon 9800 Pro 2. Athlon64, ASUS K8V Deluxe with Radeon 9200 both run Mandrake 9.2-amd64
Stock 9.2 XFree86-4.3-24mdk: Dual Opteron machine says: no device found Athlon64: X freezes with black screen, still able to log in via ssh
XFree86-4.3-24.4.92mdk from 9.2 updates (not the experimental 4.3 from Gwenole): Dual Opteron machine says: no device found Athlon64 starts in 2D, but freezes when starting some 3D application, e.g. glxgears, still able to log in via ssh
9.2 and XFree86-4.4: Dual Opteron machine works in 2D, no 3D acceleration Athlon64 works in 2D and 3D, even UT2004demo works, although the textures have very low resolution, I suspect a wrong mipmap level
If someone wants to test the 4.4 version, you can grab a patched version here (it had some issues on amd64 with wrong x11libdir/x11shlibdir variables): http://wwwknoll.in.tum.de/~riss/mdkstuff/XFree86-4.4-0.902.6mdk.src.rpm
Let's hope this XFree86 license issue will get fixed soon, 4.4 is good for ATI Cards.
cu Michi
