The situation is as follows:
Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard, 1.004 BIOS, with USB keyboard. If the USB keyboard is connected, the system as installed from the RC1 CDs boots and works.
However, the RC1 install disc itself does not work succesfully if the keyboard is connected. This means I need a PS/2 keyboard and mouse to run an install.
After the message "in second stage install", the message "probing serial ports" appears and the system seems dead (black screen) and does not repspond to the keyboard (caps lock, ctrl-alt-del do nothing).
The same system gets through this install phase correctly with the 32 bit 9.2 CDs, though after the message "in second stage install" there appear some messages "(null) 45: unknown ``I'' line", after which the graphics install screen comes up and the keyboard works.
Legacy UUSB support is on in the BIOS,a dn I tried with both USB 2.0 on and off. FWIW the keyboard is a tad strange: a PS/2 mouse can be connected, and this shows up as USB:
