Yes, it would.  kdebase-common is one of the core kde packages without
which kde won't run, and since Mandrake runs KDE as a primary desktop, and
their mdk-kdm is based on the standard kdm and likely uses the same
missing package, you wouldn't even get a login.

It does install properly here as I'm running KDE right now.  Did you
md5sum your CD images (assuming that's how you installed) before burning
them, and try cleaning the disk in question if it wouldn't install that
package?

You may be able to install it from console mode, if everything else
installed properly.  Else, you could probably install gdm and configure
that as the default login instead, or simply configure a level 3 default
boot instead of the level 5 graphical login by default, and run X or
whatever from there.  I have my system configured level three boot by
default, as it's FAR easier to troubleshoot X problems that way,
particularly if you are running a proprietary video driver as I was b4 I
decided it was no longer worth the hassle and upgraded the Nvidia to an
ATI card that supports multi-monitor in the libre drivers.
